Teena Marie Stern
Teena Marie Stern, who was a professional ballet dancer prior to her retirement in 1981, today creates graceful and poignant sculptures of women in clay that are replicated in limited editions in cold cast bronze. “With clay I can take the body to its limit, far beyond what I could ever do in dance,” Stern says. “Now it is my hands that continue the choreography.”
Following her graduation from Carnegie-Mellon University, Stern toured for 11 years with the Carl Ratcliff Dance Theatre, which she helped found. Upon retirement from dance, she studied sculpture in Washington, D.C., New York and Italy. Today, Stern’s sculptures can be found in collections throughout the United States.
