Sharon Tesche
Sharon Tesche translates the majestic grace of ancient architecture into contemporary ceramic sculptures. The vertical forms and organic textures recall the monuments and relicts of antiquity. The sculptural forms become a symbol of personal recollection and response, procured through world travel. The memory of a visit to Istanbul, Italy, or the Mayan ruins in Central America provides inspiration for hand-built, slab constructed forms that are most often raku fired, sometimes in multiple firings.
Tesche, a native of Virginia, retired from a high-profile career in advertising to pursue an interest in ceramic art, rejoicing in the solitude and beauty of her mountain home near Tryon, North Carolina. Although mainly self-taught, she has studied under noted raku artists Harvey Sadow and Penny Truitt, as well as at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, The John C. Campbell Folk School, and the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts in Asheville, North Carolina.
