Leo Monahan works in the paper sculpture/collage medium, using unique techniques he has developed to portray images of the environment that he describes as both impressionistic and surrealistic. Winner of the first Walt Disney art honor scholarship to Chouinard Art Institute, Monahan continued to receive numerous professional honors, including a life achievement award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.
Monahan is described as the foremost paper sculpture illustrator in the United States. He began his career in graphic design and ran his own advertising agency from 1960 to 1987, when he decided to place all of his effort into his gallery work.
Monahan and his wife, Karen recently relocated to Asheville from the Los Angeles area, where he made his art, consulted for Disneyland, and taught at Chouinard Art Institute, California Institute of Art, the Chouinard Foundation, The Walt Disney Company and the University of Southern California. He also has taught at Tokyo Communication Arts in Japan.
