Kay Workman
ARTIST STATEMENT: “The Appalachians are my home. My goal is to create art that conveys an appreciation of the beautiful vistas that I find here, as well as the rich history and weaving tradition of the area.”
Kay Workman, a retired art teacher from Greenville, South Carolina, photographs the Blue Ridge Mountains that are her artistic inspiration. Her art represents her personal interests in texture and nature. Using computer technology, she presents digitally layered views of her subjects. The woven imagery represents an outdoor walk, where emphasis is shifted from studies of small treasures to the expanse of distant views.
Fabric overlays and stitchery enhance the textile appearance. After printing the work on archival paper, Workman covers the photograph with a layer of organza, stitching the fabric over the photograph to resemble a quilt square. Workman signs each piece that is sold at the Silver Fox Gallery.
Workman graduated from Winthrop College with a B.A. in Art and from the University of South Carolina with an I.M.A. in Art. Workman and her husband now live in the mountains outside of Burnsville, North Carolina.
