“Nothing, above all, is comparable to the new life that a reflective person experiences when he observes a new country. Though I am still always myself, I believe I have been changed to the very marrow of my bones.” Goethe (Italian Journey)
Although my work is varied in style, the theme is always my love for Italy. My representational pieces are based on actual places I have visited, while the imaginary landscapes are a union of memory and desire. I like to overemphasize the colors in these to express the deep emotions I experience.
The mixed media works allude to the layers of age in the Italian culture and often incorporate slightly hidden photographs, inviting the viewer to look more deeply, both at the art, and metaphorically, at life. I choose pigments that are abundant in the surfaces of stucco, stone and brick architecture, and in the patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and plowed fields.
I have developed my own iconic language that conveys my introspective look at the country that for me has meant a new awakening. My moons, cypress trees, and doorways reflect both transition and the eternal. I am grateful for the awareness of my own place in this universe and hope that, like the fragments of an older civilization, a remnant of my own life will survive to another time.
