For Tim Howe, no boundaries exist between impressionism and abstraction. His contemporary interpretation of landscapes incorporates a dramatic use of color and texture. His landscapes seem to exist outside the frame, stretching beyond the actual canvas. With vivid accents and lively vigorous brushstrokes, Howe searches for new ways to present familiar subjects.
As a landscape artist, Howe is inspired to paint what he sees in nature. Drawing upon his experience as a graphic artist, Howe often thinks of images as either positive or negative shapes and isolates the most important colors. He interprets nature’s shapes and images on canvas in a bolder, more graphic way … at times using exaggerated forms and colors for maximum effect.
Howe believes that having art surround us, as nature does, is a critically important aspect of our lives. “It’s important to me that art remains an equalizer in society … available to all … exclusive to none,” Howe says.
A graduate of the Wellington School of Design, in Wellington, New Zealand, Howe studied a variety of disciplines including fine art, illustration, graphic design, photography and printmaking. After graduation, he immigrated to the United States and established a design studio in San Diego. After traveling throughout the United States and Europe, Howe gave up his thriving design practice in San Diego to become a full-time fine artist. He has spent extended periods of time painting from studios in Barcelona, Spain and Vancouver Island, Canada, in addition to his home studio in San Diego.
