Artist Statement
There is a verse in the Scriptures about God speaking to a prophet. Before the prophet come tornadoes, earthquake, then fire. The voice of God was in none of these. Then there was a gentle blowing, a whisper. And the voice of God was in the whisper. As I get older, I realize that what I have been hoping to find in the winds, quakes and fires of life are often found in the whispers.
The quiet moments of everyday things seem to hold great drama, beauty, mystery. Sometimes I can capture some of that on my canvas, board or paper. These are the pieces I share with you.
Biography
Suzy Schultz was exposed to art at an early age through her mother, who is a painter. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in mathematics and taught high school for nearly 5 years. Taking a leave of absence, she spent a year overseas with Campus Crusade’s Short-Term International program in Poland. On returning, she did some part-time graphic design work for Mission to the World, and was eventually hired to help with their publications. There she was mentored and nurtured in her artistic talent, and encouraged to paint for illustrations used in the magazine. When her mentor and boss left to go on the mission field six years later, she was told she needed to leave her job and paint full time, which she did.
Shultz has painted full time since 1996, and won many awards for her work. She is the winner of the Gold Award from Watercolor Magic magazine’s Watermedia showcase (chosen from 2,400 entries), and was featured in the August 2006 issue. Her work received Honorable Mention in the portrait category of Artist’s Magazine’s 2001 issue (out of 13,000 entries), and was featured in the Spring 2006 issue of Drawing magazine. She has also had work published in art books by Rockport Publishers and International Artist Publishers. Schultz has studied with Alex Powers, Arne Westerman and Marc Chatov. She regularly attends the open studio of Dan Willis in Atlanta where she works from a model.
