Ron Artman
Artist Statement: The creation of my forms allows me to blend the instinctive subconscious with physical exertion. I constantly use the color, shapes, line and texture found in nature in my work. I blend natural and classical forms with modern contemporary expression, allowing the viewer to see my work from many points of view.
Ron Artman’s sculpture is bold in form and richly flamboyant in scale. His sculptural ceramic vessels depict power, are forceful and intense, and yet exude an elegant and quiet grace.
Artman begins the three-month process of each piece with days constructing the large structures using traditional hand building and wheel techniques that will ultimately display his rich finishes. Following two months drying time in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, he works the pieces further before bisque firing them; he then applies the oxides, stains and washes on the final piece. Artman devotes over sixty hours into the making of a single sculpture. In the course of a year, he uses three tons of clay.
In 1988, Artman sold his graphics and screen printing business in Washington D.C. and moved to Australia. He spent the next three years studying art at the Tafe School in Alice Springs, and ceramics under Australian masters. After his return, he moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore to set up his present studio. His sculpture is in corporate and private collections throughout Australia, England and the United States.
