Derek Hennigar
After starting his career in Raleigh, North Carolina, Derek Hennigar opened his own wood shop in 1993. Hennigar strives to use local woods in most of his furniture. He originally called his work “Ordinary Furniture” as an ironic response to what he calls “boring furniture.” As his designs have innovated and techniques improved, Ordinary Furniture has become an even more ironic name, but still one that acknowledges that no activity in human history is more common than gathering and cutting wood.
Hennigar mixes established joinery, carving, and finishing techniques with his own “ordinary” design perspective. Many pieces are one-of-a-kind and others are pieces from a small series. All are made to last for generations.
