Cathy Broski
Cathy Broski’s work is steeped in archetypal and personal symbolism. Figures, houses, boats and pottery are all vessels to contain meaningful items, and sometimes those that we would cast off. Broski loves the idea of found objects because of their wear and the marks of their journeys. To achieve the look of wear in her work, Broski uses a layering technique.
Broski starts each piece on the potter’s wheel or with slabs. She “grows” the pieces by applying coils or additional slabs. When each piece is complete, Broski carves or textures the surface and lets it dry. She then applies and fires the base colors, after which she uses a combination of stains, glazes and other mediums before firing again. The process is repeated until the desired effect has been achieved.
Broski received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. She refers to her work as “art for the soul.”
