Barbara Sebastian
Barbara Sebastian loves playing and working in clay and paint. Her small porcelain works are inspired by her immediate physical and spiritual environment. Sebastian views them as “precious” objects to be held in the hand, and used on many levels. She creates containers and vessels “because I believe in the sacred space within each of us and want to share and celebrate that intimate connection and preciousness.”
Sebastian’s small ceramic work is wheel-thrown and high fired. The decoration on the surface is often hand carved to create an image of water, lightning or other atmospheric illusion. All work is glazed on the interior as well as the exterior so that it can be functional, although the function is often of a more spiritual nature as a container for a note, a dream, or ashes.
Winner of numerous awards including Best of Show, Ceramics at the Sausalito Art Festival, Sebastian holds a master of fine arts from San Jose State University and two BAs from San Jose and the University of California, Berkeley.
